Power Load Calculations

Without knowing your power requirements it is impossible to calculate your solar requirements.
This information will assist in these calculations |
Power Load Calculations
The first two factors to consider when sizing your solar electrical system are the sunlight levels in your area (insolation values) and the daily power consumption of your electrical loads. Knowing what type of appliances and equipment you plan to use and the amount of power they take is the starting point in designing your system. Using the most efficient appliances in an efficient manner will be a large factor in keeping your initial costs to a minimum. The size and cost of any solar energy system depends on the following:
• The amount of power required (in watts).
• The amount of time the power is used (in
hours).
• The amount of sun available at your location
(insolation).
Make a list of appliances and/or loads you are going to run from your system. Find out how much power (in watts) each appliance uses while in operation. Most appliances have a label on them giving the wattage.
Product specification sheets and the manufacturers are other sources for this information. If the appliance is rated in amps, multiply the amps times the voltage to find the watts. Next, you should determine how long you run these loads during an average day and/or week (in hours). |
System Loads Worksheet
Determine the total amp hours per day used by all the loads in your system.
Step 1. Calculate your AC loads. If no AC loads, skip to Step 2.
1.List all AC loads, wattage and hours of use per week in the space below. Add up all the watt-hours per week to determine AC watt-hours per week.
Total AC watt-hours used per week ____________
2. Actual AC watt-hours per week. Multiply total AC watts-hours per week by 1.15 to correct for inverter inefficiency. This may vary depending upon which inverter you purchase. _________
3. Inverter DC input voltage; usually 12 or 24 volts. This is DC system voltage. _________
4. Divide line 2 by line 3. This is total amp-hours per week used by AC loads. _________
When considering lighting ,please checkout led lighting. This Technology can cut your wattage usage up to 8 times

Step 2. Calculate your DC loads
5. List all DC loads, wattage and hours of use per
week. Add up all watt-hours per week to determine DC watt-hrs used per week.
Total DC watt-hrs used per week ______________
6. DC system voltage. Usually 12 or 24 volts. __________
7. Total amp-hours per week used by DC loads. Divide line 5 by line 6. __________
8. Total amp-hours per week used by AC loads from line 4. __________
9. Add lines 7 and 8. This is total amp-hours per week used by all loads. __________
10. Divide line 9 by 7 days. This is total average amp-hours per day. __________
Knowing these numbers now allow you design solar system |

Well here is our new cabin renovation. It is the raised part behind the cabin. It will add about 1600 sq. ft to the existing cabin.
Believe me it is easy to design and put on paper but it was a little more work to build.
The long weekend in May, the goal was to haul lumber 6 miles across lake with party barge.
Took 12 trips and a few refreshments. Thank God the lake was like glass |

A great product that I use everywhere is our solar floodlight. It is great in sheds, pathways and even cabin hallways.
Basically put the small solar panel on the roof and run cable down to light. When someone gets up in the night the motion turns on the light for a short period of time. Works Great
