Solar Water Heaters

WSE BC Flat Plate

Pressurized Solar Water Heater

$597

The design and materials used in the absorber have a significant impact on the panels performance.

WSE flat plate solar collector uses very high quality copper elements, and the Blue Coating surface permits absorption of the suns rays even in overcast weather. The thermal glass with a low iron content, is sealed by using heat-resistant rubber seals. The panel is thoroughly insulated by using fibre glass to limit heat loss, and the frame is made from anodized aluminium. With textured aluminium sheet on the rear side, the total design is extremely resistant to atmospheric impacts and temperature variations.

Testing Flat Plates in Saskatchewan

The system was operated over a one month period in March and April when temperatures were at times lower than -20º C. Figure 3 shows typical results from March 10, 2008.

Figure 3- Solar heat as a function of time.

A number of conclusions can be reached from this test:

  • The peak solar efficiency of theflat panel is about 66%. This is lower than the evacuated tube panels which can reach 95%.
  • The heat output is dependant on the solar angle during the day
  • The heat output is fairly independent of ambient temperature
  • The panel is suitable for a domestic hot water heating system
  • The clear synthetic cover is impact resistant
Using a 12 volt automotive battery and solar panel this system can operate in remote areas where no power is available
